Hello everyone
Hello everyone. Over the past couple of days, some members of the community in Rathmines were informed that Rathmines post office is due to close on Friday, July 17th. This is an absolutely scandalous decision by An Post to push ahead with a downgrading of the not-for-profit public service. They're locating to a Centra shop just down the street from the iconic post office, which has been there since 1934, and is a massive, massive public service that has served our community so well.
For many, many years. But now, the idea is now to downgrade the service into the back of a Centra shop just down the street. Currently, there's a mails and parcel collection service there as well, which is due to be relocated in early 2027, which has, again, big ramifications for local businesses in the area. Now, a couple of years ago, we started a campaign in Rathmines to save our post office. We gathered a petition with nearly 3,000.
Signatures. We also held a number of protests, and also held a number of demonstrations around the wider area in terms of what took place uh in Rathmines, absolutely scandalous. But, in response to this, we need to stand up and say no, and say we need public services in our communities that are not-for-profit, not this privatization agenda being pursued by An Post at the behest of the government. And remember, this is part of the European Union Postal Services.
“And remember, this is part of the European Union Postal Services”
Directive. And not to mention the involvement of the trade unions with this. They've signed up to what they call a transformation agreement with An Post as well, which has agreed to many of these closures taking place. So, this is absolutely scandalous. It needs to be challenged, and the ordinary people need to stand up about proper public services, particularly those who are elderly and vulnerable who rely on this basic public service in our community. So, in response.
Tomorrow, Friday, July the 17th, we're holding a demonstration at the post office at Half Four. So, we urge everybody in the local community to come along. Please share this video and get the information out to what's taking place right on our doorstep. So, thanks for the support.
